During the visit, LDA officials briefed the Governing Body on progress related to plots allocated to new KPC members in Deh Mandhra. Officials informed the delegation that the PC-1 for 639 members’ plots has entered its final stages following cabinet approval, while mapping, demarcation, and development work will be completed in phases.

LDA authorities assured that there are no legal hurdles for members wishing to begin construction on their plots in Block 68. Officials also confirmed that lease and mutation processes have been completed successfully.

It was further agreed that LDA representatives will regularly visit Karachi Press Club to guide members and help resolve housing-related issues, while monthly follow-up meetings will monitor project progress.

Nadeem ur Rehman Memon stated that relevant departments are being mobilized to develop a plan for the plots allocated to journalists. During the meeting, the Information Secretary suggested to the Director General of Malir Development Authority, Najab ud Din Sehto, to arrange a meeting with the Karachi Press Club officials. This meeting aims to organize the allotment of plots and the development work of the Karachi Press Club Journalists Housing Society in MDA New Malir and Taiser Town.

President of Karachi Press Club Saeed Sarbazi and Secretary Shoaib Ahmed highlighted the development issues of the allocated land and the additional allotment of 700 plots to the Karachi Press Club Journalists Housing Society. On this occasion, Director General of Lyari Development Authority Syed Shabih ul Hassan informed the meeting that the PC-I of the development project for over 1380 plots in Blocks 2, 3, 3A, 3A1, and 68 of the Karachi Press Club Journalists Housing Society has been sent to the Local Government for fund release.

The Information Secretary assured that based on the discussions in the meeting, further necessary correspondence will be carried out with all relevant departments, including the Land Utilization Department, Local Government, LDA, and MDA, regarding plot allotment issues and development works.

Mr. Rabbani criticized the state for colluding with media owners and the judiciary to exploit media workers, stating that while legal avenues for rights exist, workers find themselves caught in a cycle of court proceedings. He lamented the weakening of workers’ power under carefully orchestrated schemes, where labor unions arrive too late to make a difference.

Emphasizing the need for unity among journalists’ organizations, Rabbani suggested that resolving internal disputes through national dialogue could strengthen trade unions once more.

The seminar was attended by a significant number of journalists, including Saeed Sarbazi, President of the Karachi Press Club, and Shoaib Ahmed, Secretary of the Karachi Press Club, along with representatives from various other organizations.

Mr. Rabbani reminisced about the active role trade unions played in the past, noting the challenges they faced due to successive governments’ crackdowns. He highlighted the irony of journalists, who are supposed to represent society, being deprived of their fundamental rights.

He also pointed out that despite efforts to establish a coalition involving media owners and the judiciary, delays in resolving workers’ cases perpetuate injustice, contributing to the demise of the industry.

Mr. Rabbani urged journalists’ organizations to prioritize national dialogue, paving the way for a resurgence of trade unions. He criticized political parties for neglecting the revival and strengthening of trade unions, leading to a leadership crisis in the country.

In conclusion, Mr. Rabbani stressed the importance of revitalizing trade unions, asserting that all stakeholders, including those in power, fear their resurgence. He called for collective efforts to address the rights of journalists and workers, signaling a way forward for the labor movement in Pakistan.

The Karachi Press Club also presented a resolution during the seminar, which was unanimously adopted, reaffirming the commitment to address the economic exploitation of media workers.

Jahan Ara said that in many families, women do not get the help of the men of their family in education and development, yet they go ahead. Karachi: The Democratic Panel has dashed the hopes of an independent panel and The Journalist Panel in the annual elections of the Karachi Press Club for 2024. The Democrats panel has made a clean sweep for the 14th time in a row, with the polling from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday showing great enthusiasm. A large number of press club members participated in the election process. Election Committee Chairman Dr Tauseef Ahmed Khan announced the results at the Karachi Press Club. According to the results, Saeed Sarbazi of The Democrats panel was elected president with 845 votes, while his rival Aftab Hussain got 110 votes. Shoaib Ahmed was elected secretary with 843 votes, while his rival Arif Khan got 96 votes. Abdul Rashid Memon got 758 votes for the post of Vice President, Ehtesham Saeed Qureshi for the post of Treasurer with 806 votes and Muhammad Munsif for the post of Joint Secretary with 726 votes. Shams Kario, Mona Sadiqi, Shazia Hassan, Nawab Qureshi, Shoaib Ahmed, Rana Javed and Noor Mohammad Kalhoro were declared successful on 7 seats of the governing body. The polling started at 9 am which continued till 5 pm without any break. The election was a contest between candidates from The Democrats’ Independent Panel and The Journalist Panel. Out of 1503 registered member voters, 979 members exercised their right to vote in the Press Club elections.
