On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Karachi Press Club organized a protest outside its premises to condemn the Israeli aggression that claimed the lives of more than 100 media workers. The demonstrators gathered to pay homage to the slain journalists and to demand justice for the victims. Among the attendees were MQM’s Ahmed Salim Siddiqi, Karachi Press Club President Saeed Sarbazi, Secretary Shoaib Ahmed, PFUJ Secretary General AH Khanzada, KUJ President Khalil Nasir, Secretary Naeem Khan, KUJ President Ejaz Ahmed, Karachi Press Club’s former President Imtiaz Khan Faran, former KUJ President Hassan Abbas, PPF President Muhammad Jameel, and KUJ’s Governing Body member Kashmala.
Carrying placards and banners with slogans advocating press freedom, the participants denounced Israeli aggression and expressed solidarity with Palestinian journalists. Addressing the crowd, Karachi Press Club President Saeed Sarbazi emphasized that today, World Press Freedom Day, should be a day of solidarity with Palestinian journalists, whose voices haven’t been raised as they should have been. He condemned the violence and killings of journalists in Gaza, urging global leaders, particularly Muslim leaders, to take action against the injustice.
The speakers highlighted the plight of journalists facing violence and oppression in conflict zones, particularly in Palestine, where several journalists have been martyred. They praised the courage of these journalists, stating that their bravery inspires others to continue the fight for press freedom.
Furthermore, they criticized the silence of European and Asian media on the issues faced by Palestinian journalists, stressing the need for global solidarity in the fight for press freedom.
The demonstrators demanded accountability for the perpetrators of violence against journalists, including those responsible for the killings of senior journalist Jan Mohammad and Karachi Press Club President Sadiq Mengal. They called for an end to arbitrary dismissals of journalists from their jobs and urged regulatory bodies to take action against organizations harassing media workers.
In conclusion, the rally emphasized the importance of preserving press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists in conflict zones like Palestine. The leaders vowed to continue their struggle until justice is served for the slain journalists and their perpetrators are brought to justice.
